Aquaduct and Avignon

Today we left Paris and went south to Arles, stopping at the town of Avignon and the Pont du Gard, a Roman aquaduct. For our trip south we had purchased tickets for the TGV (a very fast train), and had planned to get to the station via metro. This plan was ruined after we had finished our first metro ride (1 of 3) and discovered that a crucial metro station was closed. We spent some time trying to get around this obstacle but finally decided to go above ground and find a cab, a dubious task on a Sunday morning. Fortunately we found one and made it to the station without missing our train.
The train took us to the Avignon TGV station, where we got our rental car and drove to the old city.
Avignon was the site of the Papal residence from 1309 - 1377, beginning with Clement V. Later, Avignon was inhabited by duplicate 'Anti-Popes', who were considered illegitimate.
After Avignon, we drove to the Pont du Gard, which spans the Gardon river and also serves as a bridge, hence the name (the bridge was added later). (TS)
